Third-world traffic management is really far from how first-world countries do it. If you’ve seen YouTube clips of some roads in other developing countries, you might be amazed at how we’re (relatively) more organized than them. However, that’s still no excuse for the uncouth way most Filipinos drive.

Plenty of suggestions on how to fix the issue. Commonwealth Avenue has been the key target for the MMDA these days. It’s like taming the Wild West with that. Tougher laws and restrictions, that’s what they’re trying to do. Seems like we’re not the only nation that’s trying to reform traffic management.

For years, it’s only now that Venezuela is actually suspending a driver’s license. Police chief announced that 41-year-old bus driver Ramon Parra’s license will be suspended after being caught speeding,  overloading  the bus with passengers , and not having the spare tire  in the right place. This is an indication that Venezuela’s tightening its road safety measures.

Thing is, can’t say that Venezuela’s exactly third world. Venezuela’s actually a country for gas guzzlers. Gas is cheap since they are part of the OPEC.

But I still believe that it’s really about the psychology of driving that should be influenced in our case here in the Philippines. Driver education and the appeal to decency and etiquette more than the rule of law, I’d say. ‘Cause let’s face it. It’s pretty hard to if the government has created this mindset that the law doesn’t apply to everyone.
